Butano State Park

Posted in Hiking on August 13th, 2007

One of the few State Parks in CA to allow you to hike with your dog. Only of fire roads, not trails, but we’ll take it.

Starting out. I am stressed because we are on a “trail” not a “fire road.”

Butano Fire Road

Tony and redwoods

Group shot before we turned around, about 2.5 miles in

We ended up doing about 5 miles of hiking, with about 1/2 mile of it on a trail we were not supposed to be on. But we couldn’t actually figure out the “legal” way to get to Butano Fire Road, at least not without a ridiculous detour.

What a neat place. Looks like Sunol, but 1/100 the people. Takes twice as long to get to though.

Spring is here

S-p-ring is here. Life is skittles. And life is beer.

Ok, no pigeon poisoning, but here are some flowers from the back yard.

While lilacs.

Frankenpeach. Technically, the growth is above the graft. But is it a peach, who knows.

Maple (?) tree blooming.

Good book on dog behaviorism. Similar material to Animals in Translation, but well written.

Culture Clash, Jean Donaldson

Posted in Books on March 11th, 2007

Book on dog behavior and training. Donaldson is the head of training at the SF SPCA and a positive reinforcement Nazi. If it’s not clicker training, you are wrong, abusive, an idiot, and in general should not be allowed near a dog. At the same time the language in the book is so technical that should the misguided, abusive, correction-using trainer want to become enlightened in the ways of operant conditioning, shaping, conditioned reinforcers, NRM’s (huh?), and the like, he won’t get past page two.

Of course, we all know that the only thing two dog trainers can agree on is that the third trainer is wrong.

Snow, finally!

It snowed 10 feet last week. We went to Kirkwood.

We Q’d

Posted in Tony on February 26th, 2007

Tony got his first Rally Novice leg at the San Francisco DTC trial in Daly city with a 94. We got 3 one-point deductions for out of position and one 3 point deduction for some unknown handler (that’d be me) error.
